Why the carmines are iconic

A BEAUTIFUL RETURN WITH OG SPECS

30 years of history

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of Michael Jordan winning his first NBA championship and the sneaker he wore to do it, the Air Jordan 6. Off course we all know he did this in the Infrared colourway.

During the 1990–91 season, in the face of a cool adversity from their long-standing Detroit rivals, the Bulls stayed strong to advance to The Finals for the first time ever. There, Jordan’s mid-air elegance was put on full display. And it was while wearing a pair of Air Jordan VIs that Michael Jordan claimed his first championship title.

The design of the AJ VI silhouette was famously inspired by MJ’s German sportscar (the exact same one we used in this video). It’s very essence conveyed speed and class, laden with touches like a neoprene sleeve, a translucent rubber sole and visible air. As if to validate these design decisions, the AJ VI could be found on the feet of several of pop culture’s iconic figures during its debut year.

The Air Jordan VI “Carmine” dropped when MJ was well on his way to becoming the most influential athlete of all time. Whether it was the shaved head, the baggy shorts, the tongue wag or of course, the shoes, we all wanted to be like Mike.

Having previously dropped in 2008 and 2014, the Air Jordan VI “Carmine” returns with the OG specs, including Nike Air branding, the OG sockliner and the classic lace toggles. Marking the 30th anniversary of the Air Jordan VI, this drop celebrates a pivotal chapter in MJ’s career and the history of Jordan Brand.

THE CARMINE

The season after the first championship season, during opening night and for the first half of the ‘91-’92 season, MJ wore a sharp new colourway of the Air Jordan VI, a sneaker we now affectionately refer to as the “Carmine."

The Carmine can be seen on numerous iconic photos from MJ during the course of that season. From battles with his good friend Charles Barkley to Dream Team Media Day, these kicks were present throughout perhaps the most pivotal season of Jordan's career. Always together with the (mostly folded) white "23" socks.

Be like mike

A further nostalgic dive brings us to one of the well known "Be Like Mike" commercials from Gatorade where you can spot the Carmines on the playground.

In 2015, as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Gatorade re-aired a digitally remastered version of the commercial during NBA All-Star Weekend.
